Edward Bulwer Lytton

(May 25, 1803 – January 18, 1873)

Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, First Baron Lytton, was a popular 19th-century British author whose principal stfnal work, The Coming Race (1871), was highly influential. (And an inspiration for pre-fandom cosplay.)

He is, however, best remembered for the melodramatic opening of his 1830 Gothic novel, Paul Clifford:

It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents—except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.
