A hoax specifically that someone died, usually directed at a BNF. They were a "feature" of early fandom which happily we seem to have grown out of. (Probably only because instantaneous, free communication methods make it far easier to check on anyone’s well-being.)
Bob Tucker was the target of two Tucker Death Hoaxes, both with strong repercussions, and may have been fandom’s first victim. Will Sykora was subject to a small one perpetrated by Futurians Jack Gillespie and Dick Wilson on Sam Moskowitz.
Walt Willis suffered a not very successful Willis Death Hoax. Dave Locke (somewhat accidentally) launched his own.
Earl Singleton comitted pseuicide.
