(ca. 445 BC–385 BC)

Aristophanes was an ancient Greek dramatist whose comic plays, notably The Birds (Ὄρνιθες, Ornithes, 414 BC) and The Frogs (Βάτραχοι, Batrakhoi, 405 BC), continue to influence the fantasy genre with their absurdism.

The former gave the world and fandom the wonderful phrase cloud cuckoo land (Νεφελοκοκκυγία, Nephelokokkygia), a state or realm of unrealistic, idealized fancy or utopia. The latter was adapted into a Broadway musical in 2004 by Stephen Sondheim (who had created an earlier version performed in the Yale University gymnasium's swimming pool in 1974).
