J. O. Bailey

(1903 — 1979)

James Osler Bailey, Ph.D. was a professor of literature who taught at The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He wrote on a wide variety of topics, ranging from the works of Edgar Allan Poe and Thomas Hardy to science fiction and utopian literature. In 1979 he was struck by a car and died a short time later from a blood clot. SFRA's Pilgrim Award (which he was also awarded) was named for his book, Pilgrims Through Space and Time, a "history and analysis of scientific fiction" that was originally published in 1947 (and based upon his 1934 doctoral dissertation).
