The Prometheus Award was established in 1978 to promote "pro-freedom" fiction.

L. Neil Smith was prominent in creating the prize. The first award, won by F. Paul Wilson for his Wheels Within Wheels, was $2,500 in gold. The current award is a gold coin.

The awards were discontinued in 1979-1981, but reinstated in 1982 by the Libertarian Futurist Society, which now maintains them.

The Prometheus Hall of Fame Award was created by the Society in 1983 as a retrospective counterpoint to the Prometheus Award. The first win was shared by Robert A. Heinlein (for The Moon is a Harsh Mistress) and Ayn Rand (for Atlas Shrugged).

There is also an award for Best Novel, and, on occasion, the group presents Special Awards for individuals whose work does not fit into the standard categories but reflects the ideals of libertarianism.
