(1888 -- 1940)

From his boyhood Nowlan was a fan of the stories of Jules Verne. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, where he played football and acted in university shows, he worked as a newspaper columnist. He moved to the Philadelphia suburb of Bala Cynwyd and created and wrote the Buck Rogers comic strip. He also wrote several other stories for the science fiction magazines as well as the posthumously published mystery, The Girl from Nowhere. He was married to Theresa Marie Junker, daughter of a Philadelphia baker, and they had ten children – four girls and six boys.
