An American pro writer specializing in fantasy. His best-known work is The Last Unicorn. He won the 2006 Best Novelette Hugo, and a movie for which he wrote the screenplay was nominated for the 1979 Best Dramatic Presentation Hugo.

In 2019, he won judgement of $332,500 for financial elder abuse, fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, and defamation against his ex-manager Connor Cochran.
