Paul Barnett (who usually wrote under the pseudonym John Grant) was a Scottish sf and fantasy author and editor living in the US from 1999. Two of his novels were written in collaboration with David Langford: Earthdoom! (1987) and Guts (2001), respectively parodying the disaster-novel and horror genres. He was Technical Editor for the second edition of The Science Fiction Encyclopedia and co-edited The Encyclopedia of Fantasy, for which he shared a Hugo and World Fantasy Award. He worked on various UK Eastercon and Mexicon daily newsletters. His fantasy novel The Book of the Magnakai (1992) introduced the barbarian character Thog the Mighty who still presides over the Thog's Masterclass department in Ansible.
