Standlee is a SF fan and convention organizer.

He attended his first SF convention in 1984, L.A.con II, the World Science Fiction Convention in Anaheim, CA.

Later he co-chaired the 2002 Worldcon, ConJosé, in San Jose, CA, then Westercon 74 in 2022.

He's currently on the Board of Directors of San Francisco Science Fiction Conventions Inc., the non-profit corporation that hosted the 2002 and 1993 Worldcons and CanSMOF, the non-profit corporation behind the 2009 Worldcon.

He is also past Chair of the World Science Fiction Society's Hugo Awards Marketing Committee and Mark Protection Committee.
