Joseph W. Ferman

(June 8, 1906 -- December 29, 1974)

Joseph W. Ferman was born in Lithuania and emigrated to the US as a child. He was Vice-president and director of Mercury Press and published of F&SF, and Venture (as well as other, non-SF magazines). He was officially editor of F&SF from December 1964 to December 1965 before turning the title over to his son, Edward Ferman who had already been doing the work. (He and his son were described as "the only gentlemen in sf publishing.") He also edited one anthology.
