Ignatz Mouse, the beloved of comics’ Krazy Kat, a brick-throwing mouse, became a fannish ghod in the early 1950s. His High Priestess was Nan Share, who wound up married to Art Rapp, one of the founders of Roscoe-ism.
Harry Warner, Jr., in All Our Yesterdays explained:
Nancy ... traced Ignatz' origin to a Squeak which resulted from the effort of Thought, and explained that from the resulting Thought images, fans were formed. Krazy Kat, the medium through which Ignatz was known to mundanes, was a mere pawn, a tool created to serve as a horrid example of conformity and weakness, Nancy said. The fan who enjoys life, throws bricks at established things, and jumps feet first into fusses could hope to receive Ignatz' Golden Brick.
Ignatz, alas, attracted few followers, perhaps because George Herriman’s comic strip ran from 1913 to 1944.
