Ian Whates is a British SF author and editor, and member of the Northampton SF Writers Group where he helped run NewCon.

In 2006 he launched the independent publishing house NewCon Press. In the 11-year span for award years 2009 to 2019, NewCon Press was a finalist 9 times for the British Fantasy Society Best Small Press/Independent Press Award.

Whates is currently a director of both the Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA) and the British Science Fiction Association (BSFA).

He has had short fiction published in Nature, Hub and TQR. In 2007 his short story "The Gift of Joy" was nominated for the BSFA Award. His anthology Solaris Rising 2: The New Solaris Book of Science Fiction was a finalist for the Philip K. Dick Award.

His space opera novel, Pelquin's Comet, was published in 2015.
