George Scithers entered fandom in 1954 and a few years later began publishing the Hugo Award-winning fanzine Amra for the Hyborian Legion. (Articles from Amra were reprinted by Mirage Press] in The Conan Swordbook and The Conan Grimoire.) He chaired the Discon, the Worldcon, in 1963 and wrote the extensive Discon 1 Report on how to run a mid-60s Worldcon. He was co-chair of the Philadelphia in 1977 Worldcon bid. He chaired Disclave 6, Disclave 7, and Disclave 8. He was a frequent chair of the WSFS Business Meeting.

In 1969, he published his first short story in If.
