George Laskowski, Jr., a Detroit fan, was called Lan, which he explained was his “Martian name.” He was known for wearing a coonskin cap. He was introduced to fandom by Mark and Evelyn Leeper, who invited him to a meeting of the Wayne Third Foundation.
His fanzine Lan's Lantern won the Hugo Award in 1986 and 1991, and was nominated every year from 1986 to 1996. He was part of the Detroit in '85 NASFiC bid.
Lan was married to Maia Cowan. In mundane life, he taught high-school math at Cranbrook Schools. He died of cancer.
