A bid for the 1941 Worldcon by Olon F. Wiggins and Lew Martin, which beat a New York in 1941 bid at Chicon I and resulted in the Denvention. See 1941 Worldcon Site Selection.

Wiggins and Martin hopped a freight train to get to Chicon I. The bid was a spur-of-the-moment gesture by Wiggins.

A Worldcon was a couple hundred people, max, and did not require much preparation or an exotic venue, so it was perfectly practical to bid first and get a site afterwards.
