David Mason was a fan and pro. He was a fixture in New York fandom in the 50s and hosted many Fanarchist meetings and was editor of its clubzine, Coup.

He began writing professionally in the mid 50s and published a dozen stores and four novels, including Kavin's World. He was married for Katherine MacLean from 1956 to 1962.
