Charles Eric Maine was the pen name of David McIlwain a pre-War British fan who later turned pro. He published at least one fanzine with John Burke.

He is best known for several SF serials published in the 1950s and 1960s. He also wrote detective thrillers under the pen names Richard Rayner and Robert Wade. His first radio play, "Spaceways," became a novel as well as a movie. His last SF novel was Alph (1972).
