Beresford Smith was longtime fan from New Jersey who was a frequent attendee at conventions. His first convention was the 1961 Worldcon, Seacon, in Seattle, at which he beat Harlan Ellison in a fast a furious poker game. He was a corresponding member of WSFA.

He was married to fellow fan Tamar Lindsay. Leslie Smith was his daughter.
