"Anne Smidley" was the name used on a letter to ''[[Astounding]]'' in the January 1936 issue which announced the ([[hoax]]) death of [[Bob Tucker]].  This was part of the nonsense in the (hoax) [[First Staple War]] that began in 1934.  It was the Smidley letter which caused ''ASF'' editor [[F. Orlin Tremaine]] to refuse to print any more letters connected to the First Staple War.
