The Count Dracula Society (CDS) was founded in 1962 by Dr. Donald A. Reed and was devoted "to the serious study of horror films and gothic literature." The Society evolved into the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films aka The Saturn Awards Organization.
The Academy is a non-profit organization with membership open to the public. The Academy was founded in 1972 to honor, recognize, and promote genre films, and annually presents the Saturn Awards. The Saturn Awards, established in 1972 by Reed, are given for outstanding achievement and merit in fantastic films released during the previous year.
