Al “Ajax” Hoch was a fan from Philadelphia who attended some British conventions while stationed in the U.S. Army (or working for RCA[1]) there in the early ’60s. Since no one in the UK had heard of him, the rumor spread that he was a CIA agent investigating British fandom.

Jim Groves reported that Al attended Philcon 1966, saying he was "now back in the States and has a wife, Barbara."[2]
