Donald Valentine Studebaker changed his name to Jon DeCles in the 1970s. He used the penname Olin T Fredegar in fanzines and was active in the SCA under the name Ramfis Firethorn. He published the fanzine Ludicrous Portraits and was a member of the Neofund committee and of OMPA, for which he published Naked Artichoke in War and Peace.

In the early 1960s, he was adopted as a foster brother to Marion Zimmer Bradley and Paul Edwin Zimmer and was one of the founders of Greyhaven. In the late 1960s, he married author Diana L. Paxson; they had two children; their son, Ian Grey, is also a writer. DeCles published professionally. Also an actor, he "channeled" Mark Twain for ConFrancisco.
