Cleve Cartmill

(1908–1964)

Cleve Cartmill was an American SF and fantasy author. He was a member of the Manana Literary Society and was part of the inspiration for Matt Duncan in Rocket to the Morgue.

He is best remembered today for what is sometimes referred to as "the Cleve Cartmill affair," when his story "Deadline" (March, 1944, Astounding) attracted the attention of the FBI because of its detailed description of an atomic bomb similar to that being developed by the then highly classified Manhattan Project.
