Tropicon II, chaired by Joe Siclari was held December 2-4, 1983 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In addition to GoH Marion Zimmer Bradley, attendees included Lee Hoffman, Vincent Miranda , Dave Kyle and Sarah Clemens. Convention attendance was 145.
At Tropicon II, Edie Stern introduced a new-to-conventions format for the trivia contest. Adapted from a weekly event at a bar near East Lansing, Michigan, the trivia contest was for everyone, not just a few that had signed up in advance. Here, the trivia master asked the question and whoever could answer correctly first (and be heard, which generally meant they were the loudest) received a token. The tokens were wooden nickels with the convention logo, and were each good for 10 cents in the dealer room. The trivia contest was later adopted by Mark Olson for Boskone, and chocolates were thrown to the respondents rather than wooden nickels. This style of trivia contest has been used at Worldcons since about ????
