Over lunch after a Capricon meeting on the day of the deadline for filing for the 2012 Worldcon, several members of the Chicago in 2012 bid committee began joking about a bid to hold the 2012 Worldcon in Reykjavik, Iceland over Easter Weekend. Smart phone use quickly escalated the joke as facilities for the convention and hotels were determined to exist. The Chicago filing was taken and ruthlessly vandalized and sent in prior to the filing deadline. Remembering how closely the election for the 2008 Worldcon was, in which Chicago lost by 6 votes, the submission was immediately followed up by an e-mail rescinding the filing.
