(October 16, 1924 – October 14 2006)

Joe "Old Vinegar" Gibson, Jr. was a pro writer for the pulps in the late ’40s and ’50s. He was also an active fan. His name was always just "Joe," even on his draft registration.

In the ’40s, he created a hoax sister, Jay Gibson, who, among other things, published snapzines.

Gibson hailed from Albuquerque, NM and served in the Army in Europe in WWII. In the mid-’50s he married Roberta Collins, and in the early ’60s they published G2. Gibson also was responsible for the fannish aviation fanzine, The Damned Patrol.

He was a fanartist, too; Harlan Ellison called him a “true ‘craftsman’ of the field” of fanzine art in Sol IX. Gibson provided cover illustrations for LASFS fanzines including Voice of the Imagi-Nation and Shangri-L'Affaires.
