In 1970 he moved to Washington, DC and eventually drifted away from fandom to become one of the top-rated crossword puzzle solvers in the United States, wining six national titles. (He was known as the "Iceman" because he never got flustered in contests, but just worked his way methodically to victory.)
He grew up in Kalispell, Montana, earned a B.A. in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1964, and went on to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Arizona in 1969.
